Sean Newport

Biography
Sean Newport is a San Francisco based Artist with his studio located in the Mission District. He has developed a range of artwork pieces from design to sculpture throughout his career.

Working primarily as a woodworker, Newport has honed his skills as a carpenter to fine artist over the past decade. His sculptures deal with “perceived notions of reality and the idea of creating a digital aesthetic through analogue processes.”  This is achieved by manipulating wood into three-dimensional shapes, and then painting and arranging them in ways that allow patterns to emerge from unique geometric designs.

Each wall sculpture is composed of hundreds of identical hand cut wood shapes which are then placed on a custom panel. Individually each work has the possibility of being hung in eight different ways ultimately generating new viewing experiences. You see the wall-mounted sculptures differently as you move around them and view them from different angles—something Newport encourages his audience to do, but something you can’t do when viewing the work on a screen. The colors seem to change; new patterns emerge. The light—directional, UV-sensitive, controlled by the artist—shines in surprising ways as it hits the wooden ridges and valleys. These visual experiments test the eye and the brain, challenging you to consider how a static object can seem so alive.

Newport's work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and internationally. He is was one of the original creators of Engine Works, an artist collective founded in 2010.
