Augustine Kofie

Born and based in Los Angeles and active in the Southern California graffiti scene since the mid-nineties, BIPOC artist Augustine Kofie (b. 1973) works in painting, collage and mural interventions. Kofie’s fine art practice draws together the languages of graffiti’s deconstructive lettering, mechanical drafting, modern architecture, and plunderphonics, creating a unique take on constructivist abstraction.

Kofie emerged from the West Coast graffiti scene of the 1990s, where his background in street art laid the foundation for an ongoing exploration of form, balance, and spatial harmony. His works often resemble blueprints or architectural renderings reimagined through an intuitive and expressive lens.

Drawing influence from mid-century modernism, constructivism, and jazz improvisation, Kofie’s practice bridges analog and digital sensibilities. His compositions evoke both the logic of design and the spontaneity of mark-making, resulting in works that feel simultaneously meticulous and organic. Collage, painting, and installation are all part of his evolving toolkit, allowing him to engage with space and surface in compelling ways.

Kofie has exhibited extensively across the United States, Europe, and Asia, with notable solo exhibitions in cities such as Paris, Tokyo, San Francisco, and Berlin. His work has been featured in museum exhibitions, international art fairs, and private collections worldwide. Despite his global reach, Kofie remains deeply connected to the cultural fabric of Los Angeles, where he continues to live and work.
