SAN FRANCISCO—Harman Projects is pleased to present Music Island, an exhibition by artist duo KeFe, composed of Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock. The exhibition marks the artists’ fourth solo exhibition with Harman Projects, and their first collaborative exhibition in San Francisco in many years.
Music Island is a constructed place built to honor the rituals of music—of listening, and
those of performing. Informed by their memories and lives surrounded by music: from
family to radio, from live shows to mixtapes, from painting to parenting, KeFe has mapped
their unique trajectories and meditations, and settled upon an actual place. Of the
exhibition, KeFe says, “Music Island is a private place where you can build your own
soundtrack—where you can get lost in your thoughts. It’s a space for reflection while staying
present.”
As music has shifted from physical formats to virtual platforms, Plock and Tunstall are drawn
to what continues: the objects, processes, gestures, and people that carry sound forward,
even as they become increasingly invisible. Music Island translates these elements as
architecture, as place, and while its inhabitants are imagined, they’re drawn from lived
experiences. Within the works—ranging from paintings, objects, and installations—these
figures build altars from speakers, plug in cables, and wait for cues.
For both artists, music has always been a way to organize time, mood, and memory. Music
Island marks their first exhibition to place music at the center of their collaborative work—
though, as they note, “every show we’ve ever made has already been about music in so
many ways.”
